ATEX certified sensors
The European directive 94/9/CE contains a series of technical and legal requirements for equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres created by flammable gases, vapors, mists or dusts :
- Design and construction from the point view of integrated explosion safety
- Analysis of possible operating faults (risks assessment)
- Surrounding area conditions (zoning)
- Special checking and maintenance conditions (qualification of the staff involved)
- Marking (identification, information essential for a safe use)
- Instructions (for assembling and installation)
- Documentation records
Different concepts of protection apply according to the type of hazardous areas :
« d » protection concept
Flameproof enclosure
The explosion is confined inside the apparatus thanks to a very robust envelope.
Flameproof gaskets, which must be regularly inspected, prevent any flame to go outside the envelope.
CORREGE ‘s CSADF and CTADF sensors are certified for use in zone 1 and 21 areas (medium risk) with gases or dusts

« i » protection concept
Intrinsic safety
A barrier or a galvanic isolator limits the energy delivered to the circuit in order to prevent any arc or sparks from arising.
« ia » protection concept : The equipment is able to widthstand two faults of its safety components . « ia » concept is compulsory in zone 0
"ib" protection concept : The equipment is able to widthstand one fault of its safety components. "ib" concept may be used in zones 1 and 2.

« n » protection concept
Temperature sensors produce a low level of energy and can therefore be used in zone 2 with "n" protection concept when the risk of explosion due to the presence of dust, gas or mist may occur only under very rare abnormal working conditions. In these conditions the sensors are self-certified by Correge.
"e" protection concept
Increased safety.
The components inside the envelope must not produce any arcs, sparks or dangerous temperatures under normal operating conditions. The envelope must be IP54 tight.

Zone classification for surface industries (groupe II)

Equipment category:
category | inflammables | protection level | protections / | zone | authorized protection concept |
1 |
gases, mists, vapours, air/dust mixtures
| very high | 2 means of protection or | zone 0 (gas) zone 20 (dust) | "ia" only |
2 | gases, mists, vapours, air/dust mixtures | high | 1 means de protection, frequently occuring disturbances | zone 1 (gas) zone 21 (dust) | "ia", "ib", "d", "e" |
3 | gases, mists, vapours, air/dust mixtures | Normal | requisite level of protection | zone 2 (gas) zone 22 (dust) | All protection concepts + "n" concept only in zone 2 |
Correspondances between the European, American and Canadian standards :
explosive atmosphere | continuously present | frequently present | occasionally present |
CEI | Zone 0 (Gas) | Zone 1 (Gas) | Zone 2 (Gas) |
CEC* Canada NEC** U.S.A. | Cl I Div 1/Cl I zone 0 (gas) | Cl I Div 1/zone 1 (gas) | Cl I Div 2/Cl I zone 2 (gas) |
Safety requirements impose that the maximum surface temperature of the equipment situated outside of the measure taking area be below the temperature of self-ignition of the gas contained in the hazardous zone.
| Classe de température | T1 | T2 | T3 | T4 | T5 | T6 |
| température maximale | 450°C | 300°C | 200°C | 135°C | 100°C | 85°C |
ATEX certified temperature sensros must comply with the marking requirements defined in the 94/9/CE European directive.
general marking :
Marking must be legible, durable and indestructible. A specific marking is added which depends on the requested protection concept, for example:
